Position
We are looking for a smart and enthusiastic developer to help us build a unique mass-market online savings account product. The Lead Server-Side Developer will take us from our current intermediate development stage to full production, launch, and growth. This individual will take control of and extend our existing code base while managing certain aspects of our technology operations. The ideal candidate will be a jack of all trades, who can discuss and understand business requirements and efficiently execute them to get our product to launch as soon as possible. This is a central, essential position.
The rock-star we hire will exhibit a strong desire to work in an early-stage environment where he/she will greatly impact the launch of a one-of-a-kind product that will help Americans effortlessly save money smarter. Excellent communication skills as well as the ability to handle multiple assignments are required for success. While financial services experience is a plus, it is more important to be a smart engineer who is eager for a rewarding challenge and can figure out new areas quickly.
Responsibilities
• Primarily managing and extending our existing code base in Java, MySQL, Hibernate, Tomcat, PHP
• Secondarily overseeing Betterment’s managed hosting environment and making key decisions around the implementation of cloud computing, clustering, securing, and backing up of servers
• Below is an illustrative list of upcoming challenges:
— Developing a real-time securities order matching and trading system from the ground up to rival existing legacy platforms in efficiency and effectiveness
— Building internal support tools to assist the support team in customer service, which will incorporate various permissions and audit trails while seamlessly integrating into backend systems
— Architecting a system that can effectively manage multiple external vendor interconnections such as FIX, SFTP, ACH, etc.
Experience
• Required knowledge of: Linux, Java 5+, SQL/JDBC, Hibernate 3, or similar platforms
• Demonstrable experience or accomplishments building sizeable server-side or web applications
• Strong plus is experience with: developing a live eCommerce-type web application in a production environment, web security, processing transactions and online payments, trading applications

Betterment is an exciting angel-funded startup that takes a novel approach at helping people save money smarter by delivering the returns of market investing with the liquidity and simplicity of a savings account. Nothing like this currently exists in the market, and the tools to make it happen must be built from the ground up.
We have a persuasive product demo, more than a year’s worth of development time already invested, a business model that makes money, and a beta scheduled for Fall 2009.
